For Commercial Projects, Does Your Electrical Contractor Have These Four Essential Capabilities?

Commercial buildings come in all sizes and scopes. They are office buildings, hotels, multiuse spaces, sporting facilities, restaurants and much more. Given the wide array of commercial building types, it’s essential that the electrical contracting firm you hire for a commercial project have the experience and capabilities to meet project requirements on time and on budget.

Over more than 30 years, the professionals at RJ Martin Electric have proven our ability to work on a wide assortment of commercial projects and deliver excellent work on time and on budget.

In that spirit, we’ve identified six common challenges associated with electrical contracting projects in the industrial realm, and below, we’ll highlight the capabilities needed by an electrical contractor to meet those challenges.

(1) Broad commercial experience. As mentioned, electrical contracting projects in the commercial sector come in all shapes and sizes—from small, single-use buildings to large corporate campus buildings, hotels and everything in between. Accordingly, your electrical contractor’s portfolio of past projects – and details about them like work scope and completion dates – should be the first thing you consider when evaluating your options. If a firm worked on a hotel project 10 years ago, are you confident that they can handle a similar project type today?

(2) An ability to execute electrical requirements with or without complete drawings. Choose an industry – be it commercial, industrial, health care or others – and chances are good that the project in question won’t be 100 percent engineered. At RJ Martin Electric, our electricians possess the adaptability, creativity and ingenuity needed to look beyond the drawings and truly understand how systems work in and of themselves, and in tandem with other building systems. Electrical contractors that don’t have adequate experience in your industry, haven’t worked on similar projects or can’t work with incomplete drawings, may not know what should be in the drawings—and so they can’t plan and estimate accordingly.

(3) A record of avoiding time delays and cost overruns. As the old saying goes, time is money—and time wasted through delays adds up quickly in the commercial construction realm. Therefore, the electrical contracting firm you hire must have a proven track record of adhering to aggressive and strict time constraints.

(4) A formal commitment to staying safe throughout the duration of a project. Safety is critical for any project, so it’s essential that your electrical contractor maintain an established and comprehensive safety program that ensures workers are properly trained in all elements of safe work practices. This helps to mitigate jobsite accidents and keep project schedules and budgets on track.

RJ Martin Electric places the highest priority on providing employees with a safe and clean work environment. This commitment is underscored through our training and enforcement of company policy, state regulations and OSHA rules. A full-time RJ Martin Electric safety supervisor coordinates training, conducts job site inspections and internally enforces company, state and federal regulations.
