Case Study – Edge on Euclid

You should expect the electrical contracting firm you hire to have deep and broad experience, substantial capabilities and a proven ability to deliver work on time and on budget. But at RJ Martin Electric, we believe you should expect more…

RJ Martin Electric is known throughout commercial, industrial, health care, retail and educational sectors for its decades-long track record of success with electrical projects of all sizes and scales. We possess each of the characteristics above; but a big part of what sets us apart is our ability to think outside the box, conceptualize solutions with incomplete or even no drawings and innovate in every aspect of our work.

For proof, consider our recent work on The Edge on Euclid, an 11-story, 309,350-square-foot, 240-residential rental unit building and attached two-level secured private garage in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The 15-month, $60 million project included a $4.8 million electrical scope of work, which included:

  • Electrical design and distribution
  • Lighting
  • Fire alarm
  • Lighting protection
  • 275 kW generator
  • Site lighting
  • Access controls
  • Site utilities
  • Elevators
  • Garage power, light and security

What made this project particularly noteworthy? Two things:

  1. RJ Martin Electric demonstrated true free enterprise on this project. Resisting labor affiliation pressure and championing open competition, we brought innovation and savings to this new downtown Cleveland development.
  2. The design-build nature of the project also gave RJ Martin Electric the flexibility to create a four-feed riser bus system. This unique power distribution design met the owner’s demanding electrical specifications to minimize the size of electrical closets on each floor while maintaining the maximum number of apartments per floor.

Our company’s utilization of LED lights also maximized the limited temporary power supply, which was used to power a crane, two buck hoists and 120 V panels alternating with temporary power carts every other floor.

Additionally, RJ Martin Electric self-performed 95 percent of the labor.

Demanding infrastructure restrictions necessitated innovation, best-in-class resources and proven processes

The Edge on Euclid’s construction site size was limited, so RJ Martin Electric utilized a vendor managed inventory (VMI) system to manage material on-site. This helped to maintain uncluttered work areas and enable continual work productivity.

Additionally, detailed pre-planning meetings and daily coordination with other trades by our superintendent and foreman allowed us to maintain a smooth production schedule.

Finally, RJ Martin Electric championed the merit shop doctrine while working alongside union contractors by completing the project on time, under budget and to the customer’s satisfaction.
